Why independence sounds different for women
When a man takes care of himself on every level, it’s simply called being an adult. Nobody calls him an “independent man,” because independence has always been the default expectation for men.
For women, however, history has been different. For centuries, women were expected to depend on men — to be obedient, submissive, and financially or socially tied to them. That’s why when women today embrace the title of “independent woman,” it isn’t always about boasting or insecurity. It’s often about reclaiming something that was denied to them for generations.
What has long been considered “normal” for men is still a milestone for women. And milestones deserve to be named, honored, and celebrated.
